Men who died in weekend traffic accidents identified

The Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the two men who died this weekend in separate traffic accidents.

Matt Moe, 49, was killed Saturday in a two-vehicle crash in Nanakuli. A 23-year-old Kaneohe man was arrested on suspicion of first-degree negligent homicide and driving under the influence of an intoxicant. The accident occurred at 4:45 a.m. Saturday on Farrington Highway.

The other traffic death was a pedestrian, David Kealoha, Jr., 76, who died Sunday after he was struck by a sport utility vehicle while trying to cross Kalanianaole Highway in Waimanalo. He was taken to the hospital where he later died. The driver of the SUV, a 49-year-old Ewa Beach man, was not injured.

Moe was making a left turn from Nanakuli Avenue onto Farrington Highway Saturday when his car was struck by the vehicle driven by the 23-year-old Kaneohe man.

Moe suffered severe head and internal injuries and was taken in critical condition to the hospital where he died.

The 23-year-old driver was not injured. His 25-year-old female passenger complained of abdominal pain and was taken to the hospital in good condition.

Police found alcoholic beverages in the younger man’s vehicle and also believe the suspect was speeding.

This was Oahu’s 41st traffic death, compared to 34 at the same time last year.

Alcohol and automobile related deaths again? Is anyone lobbying for a ban or stricter laws? Why not?

That is not going to help as the laws on the books are already adequate. What WILL make improvements is holding people who drink, drive and kill people on the roads accountable by having to serve prison time for many, many years and banning them for life for ever having a Hawaii’s driver’s license. Seems harsh however killing an innocent person due to drinking or impaired driving due to illegal drugs would be the appropriate punishment.

Please drive carefully out there people. No need to rush to anything, please.
