Maui police looking for driver in another fatal hit-and-run
Maui police are asking for help locating a blue-colored Dodge or Chevy full size pick-up truck that fled the scene of a fatal collision on Piilani Highway Sunday night that killed a 16-year-old girl.
The truck is outfitted with an after-market lift and tires, police said.
The vehicle was traveling on Kaiwahine Street around 8:50 p.m. when it made a left turn onto Piilani Highway at the intersection of Uwapo Road in Kihei.
The vehicle struck the girl in a marked crosswalk then fled, police said.
The girl was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition, then later died.
Police are investigating whether speed, drugs or alcohol were factors.
The death is the second hit-and-run crash on Maui this weekend.
On Friday, a white 1995 to 2001 Ford Explorer hit and killed 30-year-old Destiny Delima, of Kahului on Pulehu Road, south of Hookele Street in Kahului.
Delima was walking on the shoulder of the road when she was hit at about 7:55 p.m.
The vehicle fled. Delima died at the scene.
Sunday’s collision was Maui County’s 23rd traffic fatality of the year compared to 21 at the same time last year.

I could never understand how you can hit someone with your vehicle, then abandon the victim. Lots of cowardly people out there.
Easy to understand why: either the driver had no valid license, or had an expired vehicle registration, or had no auto insurance, or was under the influence of alcohol or illicit drugs, or was leaving the scene of a crime, or had some sort of contraband (illicit drugs, stolen merchandise or unregistered firearms) in the vehicle, or even maybe, in some neighborhoods, the driver may have had – however unlikely – a legitimate fear of hanging around to meet the nearby residents, the victim’s relatives or the local police. So lots of reasons abound including not caring about running over people in principle. Are they good reasons? Well, except for maybe the latter, no.

Illegal Alien? Quite common on the mainland. Don’t be fooled. We’ve got our share of them. That’s a comforting thought. Doesn’t say a whole lot for our TSA protocols, eh?
That pulehu road has no sidewalk or shoulder. She must have been walking on road that is full of holes. Not paved in over 40 years.
There is no street lights. What was she doing there? No people walk there.
