DOT reopens Zipper Lane after Zip Mobile breakdown

Traffic on the H-1 eastbound at Kunia Road was barely moving this morning after the Zipper Lane was unable to open due to a Zip Mobile breakdown.
Mechanical problems with the Zip Mobile prompted the temporary closure of the Zipper Lane this morning after the vehicle stalled in Waimalu at about 4:48 a.m.
Repairs were completed at about 6:15 a.m. and the state Department of Transportation has reopened at about 6:45 a.m., according to spokesman Tim Sakahara.
The Zipper Lane is normally open from 5:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. Monday through Friday for vehicles with at least two occupants, electric vehicles that bear a Hawaii-issued electric vehicle license plates and motorcycles.

sucks. perhaps we should appropriate some money for a new set of vehicles?
Just another of thousands of daily examples of Nei government agencies willfully failing to do their jobs.
In this case, failing to ensure the manufacturer’s required daily and other maintenance is done to standards. Failing to check the day/night prior the vehicle is ready to go. Just like how the Zip Mobiles went down before, here we go again.
Watch DoT try to spin their way out of this debacle. It’s what they do. Nothing.
i’m not sure who turned down the buying of 2 new vehicles..i think it was gov. ige or the DOT director..but we could’ve had 2 new vehicles already..the old ones are 18 years old..long overdue for replacement
They should have purchased new mobiles years ago. They keep putting it off. So no when they do purchase one or two the price will be much much more. If not open a warehouse to store parts and hire someone who can make repairs instead of bringing people from the mainland down. Idiots.
Again? DOT Highways sucks – nothing changes for the better and the working public gets screwed with their incompetence.
Zipper is a stop gap until we get rail.
Rail will be useless and not make a dent on traffic, period.
wiliki: I’m retired, and don’t commute eastbound weekdays on the H-1 anymore, and I certainly don’t need or want rail. I totally avoid going eastbound on any state or federal highway except on one weekend day a month.
Yipee! Only gonna get worse. I got out thank God. Decades of commute from central Oahu to the windward side. Had enough.
I am from Hawaii and could not bring myself to leave the islands. This morning I’ll smoothly commute to my job – no zip lane required here on the Big Island.

The next question is whether or not it will now be able to hobble back by the time afternoon rush hour starts. Remember the last time it could not close? Better get that tow wagon ready!

Is there no end to the incompetence at the DOT? The purpose of having 2 zip mobiles is to provide redundancy so that what happened today NEVER happens. It’s now happened at least twice since Ige and his incompetent cohorts took over. This is what happens when you hire people based patronage and political insider status instead of merit, knowledge and abilities.
What are all you betchers going to do about it beside cry here on this forum? Are you going to write to your legislators and make a formal complaint? Nah. Your ranting is not going any further than this site. That’s what you guys do…..nothing but point finger. When it comes time to vote, you’ll vote Democrat again…..right?
