Justin Thomas hit from the first tee during today’s second round of the Sony Open.

Fresh off a tournament-record 59 on Thursday, Justin Thomas remained well ahead of the field with a 6-under 64 in today’s second round of the Sony Open in Hawaii at Waialae Country Club.

Thomas closed with a 9-footer for eagle on 18 to set the PGA Tour record for the lowest 36-hole total at 123, breaking the mark of 124 held by three people, including world No. 1 Jason Day.

Thomas’ 17-under total is five shots ahead of Gary Woodland, who shot a second consecutive 64 to get to 12 under.

Zach Johnson shot a 61 to sit in a three-way tie for third at 10 under with 2013 U.S. Open champion Justin Rose, who shot a 64, and Hudson Swafford.

Thomas went out in 33 and had two birdies on the back nine before a bogey on No. 17 forced him to need eagle on 18 to set the 36-hole mark.

After driving it into the left rough on 18, Thomas hit his second shot to within 9 feet of the cup before making his third eagle of the tournament.
