The top-ranked local restaurant, ranked 12th of 100, is Frenchman’s Cafe in Kailua-Kona, followed by No. 30, Kaaloa’s Super Js in Capt. Cook; No. 36, Thai Mee Up in Kahului, Maui; No. 45, Chirashi Sushi Don by Jiro, in Kailua-Kona; No. 54, Island Bree’z in Kahuku, and in neighboring Hauula, No. 57 Aloha Shrimp. NOM Kauai in Kapaa ranks 73rd while Makai Sushi in Koloa is No. 79; and Porky’s Cart in Waimea, Kauai, wraps up the Hawaii entries at No. 95.
Nearly three quarters of the listed businesses are food trucks or fast-casual restaurants and many have an average cost of $10 per person, denoted on Yelp.com with a single dollar sign, according to a statement by Yelp.
In a departure from the methodology used to compile previous lists, site officials weighed more recent reviews more heavily, lowering the advantage a business can have with a larger number of reviews.
As such, this year’s list has more what Yelp calls “hidden gems” and fewer longstanding, famed restaurants.

…and none in the heart of Honolulu or Waikiki! Doesn’t that tell you something about fine dining and or casually ones that caters to tourists?

agree..the list is meant to highlight lesser known, more affordable gems that don’t get the same attention.

Yes most people who use Yelp don’t eat there as often. I’m assuming it”s the younger generation. That’s why nearly 3/4 were of food trucks and fast-casual.
Never trust the results of these cloud based crowd reviews – s guy I know uses a computer network to submit fake reviews to inflate ratings. Looks like poor Erika Engle got sucked in.
Obviously, these ratings are based on a unique, limited audience.
Yelp is just a tool to see what others thought of something. You may or may not agree. Even with the article list, if you don’t like sushi, for example, then the two sushi places are “no-go” for you. I check out Yelp when I want to go to a particular place and see what others thought. If it is overwhelmingly 5 stars, then it is probably good. If not, I will usually take a chance anyway and make my own decision.
Same here. I like to go to online review sites to weed out seemingly terrible places but I realize that just because a place has a high rating doesn’t mean I’ll like the food there, especially with food tastes being so subjective. I do find Yelp more helpful with things like contractors and services, though you still have to be careful.
kamaainas love value. under $10 is always sought after, if the taste and portions are good.
Eff Yelp. Very easily skewed by determined individuals.
