Senior hitter Kupono Fey put down 16 kills and third-seeded Hawaii upset second-seeded Brigham Young 25-22, 25-23, 25-22 in today’s first semifinal of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation volleyball tournament in Long Beach, Calif.

Sophomore opposite Stijn van Tilburg added 12 kills and senior middle Hendrik Mol had eight kills without an error for the Rainbow Warriors (26-4). Mol was in on five of the team’s 7.5 blocks.

Hawaii advances to Saturday’s final (4 p.m. Hawaii time) against top-seeded Long Beach State (26-3). The 49ers eliminated fourth-seeded UC Irvine in tonight’s second match, 25-19, 25-22, 25-19.

TJ DeFalco and Kyle Ensing each had 10 kills for Long Beach State, which outblocked UCI 10-3.

The Warriors have never won the MPSF tournament title and have advanced to the championship match just four times, the last in 2002.

Jake Langlois led the Cougars (24-4) with 15 kills. Ben Patch added 14 kills and Brenden Sander had 11. BYU was the defending tournament champion.
