Coast Guard crews towed a pleasure boat back to Maui after it became disabled and went adrift 17 miles north of Kahului.

The Coast Guard command center received a distress call from the 25-foot vessel Nohuli just before noon Sunday.

A 29-foot response boat from Maui took the three passengers on board and towed the boat back to Kahului Harbor, the Coast Guard said by email. No injuries were reported.

The boat was equipped with emergency position indicating radio beacon, or EPIRB, aboard, which made it easy to locate.

Also Sunday off Maui, fire crews helped a paddleboarder and his niece back to shore after they were blown out to sea on a stand-up paddleboard.

The incident happened about 1:14 p.m. Sunday off North Kihei.

A visitor from California, 57, and his niece, 10, were on a paddleboard near the Maalaea Surf Resort when the wind kicked up and prevented them from returning to the beach, the Maui Fire Department said by email. They ended up about a mile and a half south of their starting point.

Firefighters spotted the two and directed an ocean safety rescue watercraft to their location, where they were picked up and brought to shore unharmed.
