Troy Kahooilihala Jr. died in a fatal single-vehicle car crash in Makaha early today.
A 21-year-old Waianae man died in a fatal single-vehicle car crash in Makaha early today.
Family members and friends have identified him as Troy Kahooilihala Jr.
At about 2 a.m. near Keaau Beach Park, a four-door Toyota sedan operated by a 24-year-old man was traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed on Farrington Highway when it veered off the road, tore through a chain-link fence and struck an unoccupied pick up truck parked near the beach, Lt. Andre Peters of the Honolulu Police Department’s Traffic Division said.
The sedan then went airborne, rolled over several times across the beach before it came to a rest.
Kahooilihala, the rear-seat passenger, 20, was ejected about 10 feet from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver was intoxicated at the time of the crash, police said. Emergency Medical Services transported the driver and the front-seat passenger, 20, to a hospital in serious condition.
The front-seat passenger has since been released from the hospital.
Peters said speed and alcohol were factors.
