Makakilo Drive was resurfaced earlier this year, and a decision was made to eliminate some of the original crosswalks.

At present, the only crosswalks are posted at traffic lights. From the traffic light at the Malama Market intersection to Panana Street, there are four streets that no longer have crosswalks. The distance between the two established crosswalks is significant. It has presented a dangerous situation. I have seen pedestrians, both young and old, standing between vehicles attempting to cross Makakilo Drive.

Makakilo Drive is a drag strip in both directions, day and night. Vehicles exceed posted speed limits. Numerous times vehicles also speed to beat caution and stop lights. On one occasion, I stopped for the yellow light and the vehicle behind me elected to change lanes and pass me, speeding to beat the light as it turned red.

I believe that we are on borrowed time before another pedestrian is killed or seriously injured. We already had one fatality.

There are solutions. Let’s do something now, not after an accident happens.
