Makiki house catches fire for 2nd time in less than a year

Firefighters extinguished a building fire on Pensacola Street in Makiki this morning.

Police reopened Pensacola Street around 10:15 a.m.

Honolulu police shut down a section of Pensacola Street this morning as firefighters battled a residential fire in Makiki.
Ten units with nearly 40 firefighters responded to the structure fire at 1421 Pensacola Street located across the street from the Hawaiian Mission Academy campus just before 6:30 a.m.
Motorists on the H-1 freeway saw a huge plume of black smoke billowing from the structure.
Police shut down Pensacola Street between Hassinger and Lunalilo streets. Traffic on Lunalilo Street is being routed through the Makiki post office parking lot and Pensacola Street traffic is being routed onto Hassinger Street.
Motorists are advised to drive with caution and seek alternate routes.
Honolulu Fire spokesman Capt. Jeffrey Roache said firefighters brought the fire under control at 6:46 a.m. No injuries were reported.
A fire broke out at the same residence in April.
Neighbors have complained for years about the rubbish and overgrowth on the property. The city Department of Planning and Permitting issued notices of violations and notices of orders to the property owner.
In July 2018, a Circuit Court judge issued deemed the property unsafe.
A court order was issued authorizing the city to remove litter from the exterior of the property. The homeowner was ordered to pay for the cleanup.
