Woman who died in Hilo traffic crash identified
A 92-year-old woman died after she was involved in a two-vehicle crash in Hilo.
She was identified as Masako Okano of Hilo.
At about 12:22 p.m. Sunday, police said a 2000 Ford pickup truck driven by a 28-year-old Hauula man was traveling southbound on Komohana Street and started to make a left turn onto Ponahawai Street when it was struck by a 2012 Nissan sedan driven by a 25-year-old Pahoa woman traveling northbound on Komohana.
Okano, front-seat passenger of the sedan, was taken to Hilo Medical Center where she was pronounced dead shortly before 4 p.m.
Police said the sedan driver was also taken to the hospital where she was treated for her injuries and released.
The truck driver did not suffer any injuries.
Police initiated a negligent homicide investigation and are seeking witnesses to the fatal crash. Those with information on the collision are asked to call Officer Clarence Acob at 961-2293 or CrimeStoppers at 961-8300.
This is the 24th traffic-related fatality on the Big Island compared to 16 at the same time last year.

Condolences to the woman’s family. Very sad on a Sunday afternoon to have an accident like this.
My deepest ALOHA to her ohana.
Condolences to the family. “negligent homicide investigation” – who do they think was “negligent”? Did the truck turn into the path of the oncoming car?
