UH Rainbow Wahine Volleyball player Nikki Taylor attempted a kill against UC Irvine Anteaters Loryn Carter and Danielle Geiger in an Oct. 14 game at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Hawaii heads into Friday’s critical match with Long Beach State down six spots in the NCAA Women’s Volleyball Ratings Percentage and down one in the AVCA Coaches Top 25.

The Rainbow Wahine (16-5, 9-1 Big West), tied with the 49ers (15-8, 9-1) for the conference lead, dropped to 40 in today’s RPI, the computer-generated ratings that measure a team’s strength of schedule. Hawaii was at No. 15 in the national poll.

Defending national champion Nebraska (20-1), remained atop both the RPI and Top 15. The Huskers received all 64 first-place votes.

Hawaii, the lone ranked Big West team, has the highest RPI in the conference with Long Beach State falling five spots to 46. The 49ers lost to UC Irvine 3-2 last week, a match that is under protest by Long Beach State. Brian Gimmillaro, the 49ers coach, was assessed two yellow cards in Set 5 which resulted in a red card and a point, the point giving the Anteaters the 15-12 win.

Last month, UCI lost to Long Beach State in five. But the result was protested by UCI based on an incorrect ruling on a substitute; the appeal was upheld by the NCAA and the match will be replayed from the point of the contested ruling (UCI leading 21-18 in Set 2).

Bows win both games, and drop in the rankings. Makes total sense. NOT!

Yes it does. When you play in the Big West, you get teams in the 200’s RPI. It will be a long time before the BW teams can compete at the elite level because of recruiting. I don’t care that Hawai’i is a mid Major Elite team, if you don’t beat the teams above you, you won’t get your RPI to move up. Not to mention when your highest RPI team that you beat, keeeps losing to lesser RPI teams.

Unless we move conferences to, say, the Pac-12, this is how it’s always going to be. That’s also why even last year when we went 29-1, we still failed to host a regional. The NCAA does not believe the Big West amounts to anything, at least in volleyball.

Not just the NCAA. Half the BWC is under water in w-l. Hawaii had its shot against WISC, UCLA, WASH and KSU. All at home. This wahine team needs help so does the coaching…good teams close strong. Not this team. They are bipolar.
