Hiker injured while jumping at Maunawili Falls

Firefighters rescued a hiker who injured his back today while jumping at the falls on Maunawili Falls Trail, a Honolulu Fire Department spokesman said.

Firefighters were summoned to the Kailua trail at about 12:15 p.m. and reached the injured hiker about a half-hour later, said fire Capt. Kevin Mokulehua.

Firefighters packaged the man and lifted him by helicopter to Maunawili Community District Park where paramedics were waiting.

Mokulehua urged hikers to know their capabilities and avoid unnecessary risks, such as climbing waterfalls or jumping from them.

Aside from the sign warning to visitors to Maunawili Falls, I do hope that “common sense” is exercised to reduce the possibility of an unfortunate accident as well as placing our Emergency Personnel at risk. By the way, are there any warning signs warning those who use the pool about precautions that should be taken against contracting leptospirosis? Is there a HVB approved visitors handout on precautions while taking in our many attractions? I’m quite sure it would be appreciated tourist and should not hurt our visitor count. 🙂
