Over 1800 Scouts and "scouters" (the family, friends and supporters of scouts) gathered at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl for the Boy Scout's Memorial Day Good Turn event, a tradition that dates back to 1945, where participants decorate every grave marker with a miniature American flag and lei. Ninety-four units of Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and Venture Crew, ages 5 to 20, spread out among the 38,000 graves to ensure that each one has a flag and lei. Cub Scouts and Cubmaster Eric Keawe from Pack 81 gather lei from boxes to decorate a few dozen undecorated grave markers they spotted on the hillside in the background.
