Kalihi fire heavily damages new home

Firefighters were investigating the cause of a fire that caused $600,000 in damage to a home still under construction today in Kalihi.

About 40 firefighters responded to the fire in the 1520 block of Amelia Street at about 11:50 a.m. and found flames coming from both stories of the two-story residential structure, said Honolulu Fire Capt. Scot Seguirant.

Firefighters extinguished the fire by 12:24 p.m.

One man living in the home was in the garage at the time and escaped without injury. Firefighters assisted two elderly residents from nearby homes.

Seguirant said the fire also caused $10,000 damage to the home’s contents and $2,000 in heat damage to a neighboring home.
