Maui woman, 49, is killed by truck while sunbathing

A 49-year-old Paia woman was killed after she was struck by a vehicle while sunbathing near the top of a hill at Hookipa Beach Park on Maui. Maui police identified the woman as Pascale Lelan.
A 49-year-old Paia woman was killed after she was struck by a vehicle while sunbathing near the top of a hill at Hookipa Beach Park on Maui.
She has been identified as Pascale Lelan.
Police said a 20-year-old Haliimaile man operating a silver 2006 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck climbed over a small grass hill next to the lower parking lot of the beach park at approximately 5:04 p.m. Sunday and struck Lelan.
She was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center where she later died.
Police said the pickup truck driver was not injured.
Police are investigating whether speed or alcohol were factors.
This is Maui county’s 15th traffic-related fatality compared to 12 at the same time last year.
