This composite satellite image shows a cold front that could bring heavy rain approaching the islands from the northwest.

Winds are shifting to the southeast as a cold front approaches the islands, bringing muggy weather, vog from Kilauea volcano and possible locally heavy rain and thunderstorms through this weekend.

National Weather Service forecasters say Kona winds are bringing humid air and hazy vog to Honolulu today.

The muggy daytime conditions will be replaced by cooler temperatures at night, dropping into the low 60s in some places.

A cold front from the northwest is expected to move over Kauai and Oahu Friday and stall over the islands, likely creating wet weather into the weekend.

The forecast for Honolulu calls for a 50 percent chance of rain Friday and a 70 percent chance of rain on Saturday through Sunday.

Light northeast trade winds could return Monday. Forecasters say moisture from the cold front may linger and bring an increased chance of showers through the beginning of the week.
