Details unveiled for another residential project in Kakaako

Kamehameha Schools and Castle & Cooke Homes Hawaii Inc. shared details of another piece of residential development in Kakaako Wednesday that is expected to add 183 homes in two mid-rise buildings in early 2016.

The project called 400 Keawe will be made up of a six-story condominium with 95 units developed by Castle & Cooke, and a seven-story apartment building with 88 rentals developed by Kamehameha Schools.

The roughly $60 million project will also include a 14,500-square-foot plaza and a 24,000-square-foot building for retail use.

The project site is a 2.8-acre parcel bounded by Auahi and Pohukaina streets, One Waterfront Towers and Keawe Street.

Tenants on the half block — including Alu Like, nonprofit volleyball institute Ka Ulu-koa, J’s BBQ and Hawaiian Beauty Products Ltd. — began receiving notices in June that they would have to relocate to make way for development.

All structures on the site will be demolished except for the Alu Like building, which will be converted for retail use.

The 400 Keawe project is part of a Kamehameha Schools master plan that is called Our Kaka’ako and involves nine contiguous blocks slated for 2,750 housing units, mostly in seven towers, and 300,000 square feet of commercial space.

Construction on 400 Keawe is projected to begin by the end of the year and finish in early 2016 if permit approval is received from the Hawaii Community Development Authority, the state agency regulating development in Kakaako.
