Fire destroys house near Hilo Airport

A single-story house was destroyed in a fire makai of Hilo Airport Thursday morning.

The house at 1922 Kalanianaole Ave. was engulfed in flames by the time firefighters arrived at 8:26 a.m., a fire spokes­man said.

The fire was extinguished about 42 minutes after the initial alarm at 8:20 a.m., according to a fire incident report.

Fire Department officials said the blaze caused an estimated $45,000 in damage. The cause was under investigation.
