All but two of the Honolulu traffic cameras are back online this morning after vandals knocked 24 cameras out of service when they cut fiber optic cables.

Most of the Honolulu traffic cameras  apparently vandalized by copper thieves are back online this morning.

The city said its electricians were able to splice fiber optic strands to allow camera images from Fort Weaver Road, Kaneohe, the H-1 freeway and Kamehameha Highway to once again be seen at the Traffic Management Center and online at http://www1.honolulu.gov/cameras/traffic.htm .

Those repairs were completed Tuesday, but two cameras along the airport viaduct are still down and cannot be fixed until the end of the month. Those cables need to be replaced, a city spokesman said.

The city believes thieves in search of copper wiring cut the cables in Kalihi and blacked out 24 traffic cameras in Kalihi and Kaneohe over the weekend.

The conduits carrying the cables are under the Middle Street bridge at Kamehameha Highway, and under H-1 freeway near Middle Street.

Anyone with information about the theft is asked to call the Honolulu Police Department.

The city initially estimated it could take up to 30 days to replace and repair the damaged cables at a cost of more than $10,000.
