Fishermen return to Diamond Head waters

The Department of Land and Natural Resources announced the opening of the Waikiki-Diamond Head Shoreline Fisheries Management Area Oahu, to fishing for one year beginning January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2012. The fishery management area encompasses the nearshore waters between the Ewa wall of the Waikiki War Memorial Natatorium and the Diamond Head Lighthouse. Fishing is not allowed in the Waikiki Marine Life Conservation District, between the Ewa edge of the Natatorium and the Ewa edge of the Kapahulu groin (seawall). Permitted fishing methods include pole-and-line, thrownet, spear (daylight hours only), and hand harvest. (Jamm Aquino/Honolulu Star-Advertiser).
Fishermen spent New Year’s Day returning to the waters between the Waikiki War Memorial Natatorium to the Diamond Head Lighthouse.
The area is open again for fishing until December 31.
The state allows fishing in even-numbered years and prohibits it in odd-years to allow fish stocks to replenish.
The Waikiki-Diamond Head Shoreline Fisheries Management Area has been closed to fishing every other year since the late 1980s.
The Department of Land and Natural Resources says fishermen may use poles, throw nets and their hands to catch fish in the area. Spearfishing is allowed only during daylight hours.
Fishing still isn’t allowed in the Waikiki Marine Life Conservation District, which is between the Natatorium and the Kapahulu sea wall.
