Fresno State drops Hawaii women’s basketball team

Fresno State withstood a valiant second-half rally by the Hawaii women’s basketball team to prevail 83-70 today at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Too many second chances for the second-place Bulldogs (21-7, 12-2 Western Athletic Conference) doomed the seventh-place Rainbow Wahine (10-18, 4-11). FSU grabbed 18 offensive rebounds for 33 second-chance points.

Hawaii was outrebounded 41-32 and failed to close an 18-point halftime deficit largely because of 12-for-25 shooting on free throws. UH came within six points at 62-55 with 9 minutes left, but couldn’t get any closer.

Point guard Keisha Kanekoa and forward Breanna Arbuckle each led UH with 16 points, while shooting guard Megan Tinnin added 15.

Jaleesa Ross, the preseason WAC player of the year, led the Bulldogs with 25 points, including five 3-pointers.

FSU, the top 3-point shooting team in the country met its average at 10 makes from long range. It beat UH for the 11th straight game.
