Kaneohe man charged with murder in fatal stabbing

Authorities today charged a 47-year-old Kaneohe man with stabbing and killing a 55-year-old man during an argument.
Bryan Lucrecio was charged with second-degree murder. His bail is set at $500,000.
Police said Darryl Tomita was stabbed in the back during an argument at a home in Kaneohe on Waikapoki Road at 5:25 p.m Tuesday.
The Medical Examiner’s office said the cause of death is pending the completion of an autopsy.
Lucrecio was arrested at about 6:15 p.m. at Kaneohe Bay Plaza on Kamehameha Highway.
Tomita was taken to the hospital in extremely critical condition, according to Emergency Medical Services. He later died at the hospital.

Lucrecio is is a former patient of the Hawaii state hospital with a history of violence.
This is the 4th story in 2 days about mentalky-ill individuals being arrested because of violence, including the Korean tourist on the flight to Japan, the patient who assaulted a nurse in the middle of the night at the State Hospital, and the conviction Joseph Tui for murdering his OCCC cellmate 3 months after assaulting staff at the State Hospital. Oh yeah, and toss in the political debate at the capitol about how to prevent those with mental illness from accessing forearms.
All this illustrates the costs of inadequately treated mental illness, and the challenges of providing it. Make no mistake, these stories are only a tiny fraction of the such problems throughout the state. Taken together, all the costs of inadequate mental health care are enormous.
Why, then, does Roz Baker refuse to provide better oversight of our health plans that ate paid billions in Hawaii, on part to provide access to proper psychiatric care?
Growing up on Kauai in the 30/40’s the mere mention of Kanehoe evoked fear of being incarcerated in mental institution located there. Kanehoe really was mentioned with disdain similar to Molokai, abandonment or isolation! Scary places? Yet these places kept the peace in the neighborhoods.
Can’t be too scary. After all, Windward Community College is located right next door to the State Hospital in Kaneohe.
