A 52-year-old visitor from San Diego was forced to spend Tuesday night in ‘Iao Valley State Park where she got lost hiking.

Maui fire officials reported that a Kihei woman called 911 on Tuesday after she received a text message from her friend saying she got lost and disoriented while hiking above the state park.

At 7:28 p.m., a Wailuku fire crew confirmed the hiker’s car was still in the parking lot. Fire rescue crews hiked up about a mile above the park, along the ridge trail and the two lower streams, but was unsuccessful in locating the hiker. Rescue crews left the park at around 10:30 p.m. after suspending the search for the night.

The woman was located Wednesday morning along a stream about 3 miles above the park and a fire rescue crew airlifted her to the park’s parking lot at around 6:15 a.m. The woman sustained only minor scrapes and scratches and declined medical treatment.
