2 divers injured, one fatally, in ocean incident off Lanikai

A 59-year-old Kailua man died and his 25-year-old stepson was seriously injured in a bizarre ocean incident today.
The two men were diving in waters off Lanikai Beach about 1 p.m. when the younger man was struck by the propeller of a passing boat.
The injured man was helped ashore and transported to a local trauma center, according to Ocean Safety spokeswoman Shayne Enright.
However, the older man, described by family members as an experienced free diver, could not be located, prompting a intensive search of the area by Honolulu Fire Department and Ocean Safety personnel.
The man’s body was located two hours later roughly 200 feet from shore.
An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

Years ago while swimming in his usual spot by Kapahulu groin, a speed boat took the life of a man who lived in my building.

This article should answer more questions. Did the writer even speak with anyone involved in the incident? Were they using dive flags? What was the cause of death for the 59 year old? Was he also struck by the propeller? Why did it take so long to find him? What happened to the driver of the boat? Was he arrested? There appears to be very little effort in this article.
This will prompt another new law where a no propeller zone is buoyed off to keep the swimmers safe.

Last night on KHON they reported that the divers did have dive bouy. They did not comment on the cause of death for the 59 year old, but I don’t think it’s too much of a stretch to imagine one was hit on the head and the other was hit by the propeller.
