Woman who died in Waialua head-on crash identified

The Medical Examiner’s office has identified the 22-year-old Kaneohe woman who was killed Sunday on Kaukonahua Road when she lost control of her car and crossed the center line, hitting another car head on, as Kiana Smith-Simon.

Smith-Simon was the driver of a 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier — police said the vehicle came around a turn, crossed over to the oncoming lane and collided head on with a Subaru— and was taken in critical condition to the Queen’s Medical Center, where she later died.

The driver of the 2003 Subaru, a 35-year-old Waipahu man, was seriously injured, but was subsequently treated and released from the Queen’s Medical Center.

Police said was Smith-Simon was driving north toward Waialua at about 12:30 p.m. when the accident occurred near Wilikina Drive. The highway had been paved last week and it was raining at the time of the collision.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine cause of death.

This was Oahu’s 12th traffic death, compared to 17 a year ago.

Given this accident happened in the middle of the day, we can probably discount falling asleep at the wheel as the cause. And unless the autopsy uncovers a medical condition, we may never know if distracted driving or some other cause was to blame.

Cause?…probably speeding and wet conditions. Sad to see many out of area residents getting involved in fatal/critical accidents. Been up and down that road my whole life and saw many accidents. Community tired to address this issue many times but really no solution except for drivers to slow down. It’s a beautiful drive when you go slowly.
