Honolulu ranked first in the nation in 2015 for the amount of photovoltaic installed per capita, according to a study released Wednesday.

Honolulu; Indianapolis; San Jose, Calif.; San Diego; and Albuquerque, N.M., are the top five cities in the nation for installed solar PV capacity per person, according to “Shining Cities 2016: How Smart Local Policies Are Expanding Solar in America,” which was released by the Environment America Research & Policy Center.

The cities have 50 or more watts of installed solar PV capacity per person. These cities have experienced dramatic growth in solar and are setting the pace for solar development, the study said.

Honolulu was fourth in total installed solar PV capacity. Los Angeles leads the nation followed by San Diego, Phoenix, Honolulu and San Jose.

Hawaiian buys second Airbus simulator

Hawaiian Airlines has reached an agreement with Lockheed Martin Commercial Flight Training to purchase a second full-flight simulator for its pilot training facilities at its corporate headquarters in Honolulu.

The new A320 series simulator will allow Hawaiian to continue its advanced qualification program for pilots using the most advanced and sophisticated technology available as the airline begins preparations for the arrival of its A321neo fleet in 2017.

Hawaiian became the only Hawaii-based airline to have an on-site full flight simulator for its pilots when it installed the A330 simulator in 2013. The state’s largest carrier said the A320 simulator is a multimillion-dollar investment estimated to return several millions of dollars in cost savings annually.

Hawaiian currently employs more than 600 pilots and will hire nearly 200 new pilots with the addition of the A321neo fleet. The airline will take delivery of 16 A321neo aircraft between 2017 and 2020, with rights to purchase an additional nine aircraft.

The A321neos will seat 189 passengers in a two-class configuration (first and coach) and have an operating range of 4,200 miles.

Alaska Air to add Bellingham-Kona flights

Alaska Airlines said Wednesday it will begin weekly seasonal flights between Bellingham, Wash., and Kona beginning Nov. 12 and running through April 1, 2017.

The flights will be on Saturdays using 163-seat Boeing 737-800 aircraft.

Kids’ lemonade contest set for Pearlridge

Lemonade Alley, a hands-on innovation challenge that provides K-12 kids with an opportunity to learn entrepreneurship, financial literacy and charitable giving, will return to Pearlridge Center on Saturday.

Teams of two to five kids create a lemonade recipe, design and build a lemonade stand and raise money for a charity of their choice. Since its inception in 2011, the kids have raised more than $40,000 for 35 charities.

The event, scheduled from 3 to 7 p.m., will take place on the Pearlridge Downtown fourth-level parking deck above the Consolidated Pearlridge West Theatres.

The Hawaii Paralegal Association is hosting a Hawaii Legal Products & Services Expo at 8 a.m. on May 6 at Cafe Julia at the YWCA at 1040 Richards St. The target audience is attorneys, paralegals, office managers and legal information technology directors in Hawaii.
