Nabors heads to heartland for annual Indy 500 number

Jim Nabors, the beloved "Gomer Pyle" TV star who's a Diamond Head resident, will make his umpteenth appearance at today's Indy 500 races at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He'll perform the poignant "Back Home Again in Indiana" with the Purdue All-American Marching Band before the racers start their engines -- a ritual he's done for more than three decades.

Though Alabama-born, Nabors is practically a citizen of Indiana, simply for delivering the anthem following "The Star-Spangled Banner" and taps. He missed one year because he was recovering from a liver transplant. Though he's generally "retired" in the islands (he once starred at the Hilton Hawaiian Village and staged a decade of Hawaii Theatre Christmas concerts despite a bum knee), Nabors gears up for the Indy event. His Hawaii rheumatologist, Dr. Ken Arakawa, is part of his entourage -- just in case. ...

FORBES IN HIS FUTURE: Bruno Mars didn't make the cover of Forbes magazine, as he wished in his "Billionaire" song, but he's getting there. In the mag's Celebrity 100

issue, now out, he's earned a three-page spread. Forbes estimates the Roosevelt grad has generated $8 million via his producing-performing-composing career. So far, so good. ...

OK, Mars didn't sweep last week's Billboard Music Awards (he had 11 noms), but he collected one prize: His "Just the Way You Are" was named Top Radio Song. And guess what: You can order a Bruno Mars Snuggie on his website. ...

The Grammy winner will headline Macy's Glamorama event Aug. 5 at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis, a nod to his fashion style and sense -- retro, cool, topped with a fedora. ...

DATES TO CIRCLE: Manoa Marquee, Manoa Valley Theatre's annual fundraising event, will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Aug. 7 at the Pacific Club, with "An Evening of Superheroes" as the theme. MVT will honor Gov. Neil Abercrombie and Nancie Caraway (the gov's wife), the law firm of Cades Schutte, and Alice and Jerry Tucker for their "superhero" support.
