TOKYO >> Former sumo grand champion Taiho, whose 32 championships are the most in the history of Japan's ancient sport, has died at age 72.

Taiho, who real name was Koki Naya, died of heart disease Saturday afternoon at a Tokyo hospital, the Japan Sumo Association announced.

Taiho won 32 Emperor's Cups in a sumo career that started in 1956 and lasted until 1971.

Chiyonofuji, who retired in 1991, has the second most championships with 31. Mongolian Hakuho leads all current wrestlers with 23 Emperor's Cups.

I remember Taiho. He was the greatest, at that time. Anyone remember watching him on black and white TV on the Japanese Channel. It was really exciting and listening to the ref funny too.

Taiho was a little before my time, but I'd watch Ozumo Digesto in the 70s with my dad and remember lots of wrestlers. Later, the Hawaii guys did great too. Who do you think would win -- Chiyonofuji or Taiho, both in their prime?

I wonder how much longer Sumotori would live if they ate brown rice instead?

Sumo is an unhealthy sport. These men just sacrify for the thrill of crude spectator emotions.
