Sears at Ala Moana Center to close June 2, employees told

By Michael Tsai

LAST UPDATED: 01:38 a.m. HST, Feb 19, 2013

Employees at the Sears store in Ala Moana Center have been told that the store will close on June 2, several months earlier than originally planned.

Several Sears employees confirmed that the announcement was made at a managers meeting Monday.

“We don’t know any of the details,” said one part-time employee, who asked not to be identified. “All the managers told us was June 2.”

Another employee, who also asked not to be identified, said she was told that liquidation sales would begin in March and that other Sears locations in Hawaii would not be affected.

“I was shocked,” she said. “We knew the store was going to close sometime, but they kept telling us it wasn’t going to happen until later.”

In 2012, Sears Holdings Corp. struck a deal with Ala Moana Center owner General Growth Properties Inc. to sell the store — one of the original anchor tenants when Ala Moana Center opened in 1959 — and 10 other mainland stores for $270 million. At the time of the agreement, Sears spokeswoman Kimberly Freely stated that the store would be closed in early 2014.

Sad. Just a sign of our economic times. Unfortunately, this is not the end of the trend. At the same time as people are losing jobs and seeing pay cuts we have the teachers demanding a pay raise every year for four years. Workers in the federal sector are getting huge pay cuts including furloughs. Private sector is findng layoffs after layoffs.

Yeah, the economy is improving and with more people on unemployment let’s raises the minimum wage so there will be more on unemployment to benefit from Obamacare when it hits the fan next year. What are your elected congressional delegates and your governor doing to ensure your livelihood so you can live in Hawaii or at least have a roof that you own over your head? Nothing, they’re currently worried about helping illegal immigrants to remain in the U.S. and become citizens to vote them back into office in two years. Could it be that they have a plan to have some other wealthy person to buy an island to develop to give people jobs like Lanai?

I don't live in Hawai'i anymore but I find this story very sad. I remember being very young and going to Ala Moana with my family. The stores were still closed on Sundays, and my parents used to let us walk around on the mall........Sears was always there..... I wish were there to visit it before it closes...

Sears owes a lot to Eddie Lampert. (sarcasm) He is truly a giant killer! I wish the best to my former co workers as the economic rug is yanked out from under their feet. Sears next step will be to follow JCP and leave Hawaii.
