By Star-Advertiser staff

Hawaii island firefighters battled a fire in Pepeekeo this morning that left a family of five homeless.

The Red Cross said two adults and three children lived in the single-family home. They escaped without injury.

The fire broke out at about 8:09 a.m. and burned two bedrooms in the back of the house at 28-0530 Kalaimano Road.

Firefighters brought the fire under control at about 8:30 a.m. and extinguished it at 8:45 a.m.

Damage is estimated at $84,000, but firefighters say their efforts were able to save the home from another $20,000 in damage.

The cause is under investigation.

The American Red Cross offered help to the family affected by the fire.
