LAST UPDATED: 04:06 p.m. HST, May 15, 2013

Hawaii News Now Sports Director Chris Tanaka will relinquish the post when he succeeds Shawn Ching as co-anchor with Stephanie Lum weekdays at 5 and 5:30 p.m., the station has announced.

Ching’s departure, to allow him focus full-time on his law career, was announced in April. At the time it was said his last day on the air would be a week from today on May 22, the end of the Nielsen ratings period, but now his last day will be Friday, May 24, said News Director Mark Platte.

In his new role, Tanaka will report and shoot video for stories, Platte said.

The station has not yet named a successor for the sports director position.

I always thought Chris Tanaka was a short-timer, with his eye on a big market, or ESPN. He must have caught Island Fever!

Hawaii has not had any respectable local TV news coverage in many years. The five o'clock news is laughable and amateurish.Thirty second sound bites have become the standard. I'm disgusted by the poor delivery and improper use of language. It's all about personalities(?) and celebrity(?). It's pretty much the same for the 6 o'clock airings too. All is tainted with a vey liberal slant. One announcer has finally started to pronounce Hawaiian names and places somewhat correctly. This person always had an "in your face attitude". Why do announcers always seem to laugh and giggle a lot when beginning a news piece. One announcer is really annoying with her on going giggling. No investigative in depth coverage and/or anything controversial. If you depend on local news you will be greatly misinformed. Sad. I no longer am a viewer

I miss Matt Levi. Up until a few years ago, I would only watch the first five minutes. I can't event take that anymore. Shawn Ching was probably the only anchor I could stand.

Tanaka is kinda creepy. The weather girl robins is a dingbat Lisa Kubota head and shoulders above the rest. She just delivers the news ... what a concept.
