Anae hired as UH women’s hoops assistant

Wendy Anae has been hired to complete the staff of Hawaii women’s basketball coach Laura Beeman in time for the 2013-14 season, UH announced today.

Anae, a former head women’s basketball coach at Brigham Young-Hawaii (2006-10), was the director of basketball operations since 2010 at BYU-Provo.

The Kahuku alum and former coach replaces assistant Gavin Petersen, who took an assistant job at Pacific.

“To find the perfect fit is rare,” Beeman said in a UH release. “We are thrilled to have Wendy join our coaching staff. “Being born and raised in Hawaii she adds familiarity to our program within the community. Wendy will bring a variety of levels of coaching experience, ties to the Hawaiian and Polynesian communities and a sense of calm to the program. The entire staff and team are excited to welcome Wendy to our Rainbow Wahine ‘Ohana.”

Also, UH announced the signing of 6-foot post player Angelina Smith for the ’13-14 season. Smith, a true freshman, averaged 12.5 points, 6.8 rebounds, 1.8 blocks and 1.6 steals per game for the Widefield High (Colo.) Gladiators as a senior.

Smith is the fifth player signed by UH for the upcoming season.

“Angie is a great late addition to our team,” Beeman stated. “Angie brings size and a great work ethic to our post play. She has a ‘never say quit’ attitude that will not only help us win games but will push her teammates to be better! The entire staff and team are excited to welcome her and watch her grow as a player and as a person.”
