The  Pearl Harbor-based guided missile destroyer USS Michael Murphy left on its first western Pacific Deployment Monday with a crew of 300 sailors.

The vessel is named for Lt. Michael Murphy, who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, for his actions with a Navy SEAL team in Operation Red Wing in Afghanistan in 2005. The ship was commissioned at Pearl Harbor in 2012.

The ship assigned to Destroyer Squadron Three One (DESRON) 31 will conduct goodwill activities with partner nations along with various presence operations such as Oceania Maritime Security Initiative (OMSI).
