The former executive director of a nonprofit organization that provided services to the disabled has been accused of embezzlement and indicted by a federal grand jury for theft.

Mitchell J.W. Keawe Jr., 50, of Kailua, was executive director of the Hawaii Centers for Independent Living, a now-defunct nonprofit that served the disabled on Oahu, Maui, Molokai, Hawaii island, Kauai and Guam, according to the FBI.

Keawe, also known as Kimo Keawe, faces three counts of theft from an organization receiving federal funds. The organization was primarily funded with grants from the U.S. Department of Education, the FBI said.

Keawe is accused of embezzling $179,222 from Oct. 4, 2011, through Dec. 20, 2013, and is scheduled to appear in federal court in Honolulu on Feb. 12.  He has not been arrested, the FBI said.

The maximum penalty for the charges is 10 years in prison per count.
