Maui firefighters battle Kaanapali brush fire

Maui firefighters are battling a 120-acre brush fire in the hills above Kaanapali.

The fire was initially reported at 2:49 p.m. Responding crews had difficulty finding access routes to the fire, which was about 5 acres at the time, according to Maui fire officials.

Firefighters from Lahaina, Napili, Wailuu and Kahului fought the fire through the late afternoon and evening with the support of two helicopters, two dozers, and a pair of water tankers from the county Department of Public Works.

A Maui Fire Department release stated that there is still active fire burning withing the firebreaks being cut by bulldozers around the fire.

No homes were threatened and no injuries have been reported.
