Firefighters rescue Japanese visitor lost during Mauna Loa hike

Hawaii island firefighters rescued a 42-year-old visitor from Japan who lost his way while hiking on Mauna Loa on Sunday.

Firefighters were alerted to the situation at 7:18 p.m. and were on scene by 8:14 p.m.

According to a Hawaii Fire Department report, the man had been hiking all day and had encountered heavy rain, strong winds and temperatures in the low 50s before rescue personnel using an all-terrain vehicle found him along the Mauna Loa Observatory trail, about a mile and a half above the observatory.

The hiker was transported to Hilo Medical Center suffering from exhaustion and hypothermia.
