UH basketball picks up junior college forward

Brian McInnis

The Hawaii basketball team added some much-needed size for next season in 6-foot-8 Gibson Johnson, a power forward out of Salt Lake Community College.

Johnson, a sophomore with two years of eligibility remaining, announced his commitment on Twitter. The seventh player to accept a scholarship offer to Manoa for 2016-17 chose UH over North Carolina State and Utah Valley. He visited the UH campus last month and is the second big man in the class, along with 6-7 Zigmars Raimo of Latvia.

“I loved the coaches at Hawaii and my visit. It just felt right. Beyond excited,” Johnson messaged the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

He averaged 12.0 points and 5.6 rebounds for SLCC, the NJCAA national champion which went 31-8.

UH has one more scholarship to assign for 2016-17.

INTELLIGENT OF THESE JC XFRS TO FIGURE OUT THAT NEXT YEAR THERE IS NO GUARANTEE OF A POST-SEASON APPEARANCE, EVEN WITHOUT A NCAA SANCTION.

THEY JUST WANT TO PLAY FOR HAWAII, AND TRY TO WIN EVERY GAME.

Vertical jump unimpressive. Slow, doesn’t have a quick first step. Doesn’t show pro-like offensive moves to the basket. Highlight doesn’t show any dunks. 30% from 3 pt range not impressive. Guess that’s why no stars, unranked, and not highly recruited. But at this very late stage in the game with so-so bigs thus far, take what you can get.

We have a smart coaching staff that can assemble a team analyzes the roles of each player , their strong points and how best to utilize them seeing than as a fit to the system to be run offensively and defensively. Coaches will develope these players much like how San Antonio does without super stars.l but with guys who know their roles and how to execute. Go Warriors!

Hey Pacific, don’t be a hater… This process is going to take some time.

Looks like UH has all the positions covered except for center. No one to replace 6-foot-11 Jankovic and Jovanovic. Guess they’ll be playing with a smallish lineup this coming season.
