KAILUA-KONA>> A resident of a Big Island community where fire destroyed several structures this week is claiming responsibility for the blaze.

Fifty-year-old Joshua Merez says his barbecue was to blame for Thursday afternoon’s brush fire in the Hawaiian Ocean View Estates subdivision of Kau.

The fire consumed two homes, two vehicles and an agricultural building before it was brought under control. No injuries were reported, but dozens of homes had to be evacuated.

Merez says he tried to put the fire from his barbecue out with a hose but it wouldn’t reach and broke off. He then ran to get his grandchildren out of the home. When he returned, Merez says the fire was out of control.
