Man in critical condition after attack

A man in his 30s was in critical condition after being attacked at Keeaumoku and Makaloa streets early yesterday.

The assault happened at about 3:57 a.m., said Emergency Services Department spokesman Bryan Cheplic.

Cheplic said the man was walking with another man back to their vehicle when the two were assaulted "by a number of unknown assailants."

The man was taken to a local trauma center.

The other man did not need medical treatment.

Search goes on for missing snorkeler

The U.S. Coast Guard planned to extend its search through last night and this morning for a missing 54-year-old Colorado woman who disappeared while snorkeling in the Black Rock Beach area of Maui.

The Coast Guard identified the woman as Tina Fox.

Maui fire, lifeguard and police personnel are expected to continue searching today depending on the Coast Guard search.

They are looking for signs of the woman last seen about 150 yards from the Sheraton Maui Resort and Spa wearing a blue swimsuit and fins.

The county agencies searched until nightfall yesterday for the missing snorkeler in the Black Rock Beach area, said Maui County spokeswoman Mahina Martin.

The county also used its helicopter and two ocean rescue boats yesterday.

The Coast Guard was contacted at about 4:30 p.m. yesterday and dispatched a 45-foot response boat from Maui and a HH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Barbers Point to assist in the search.

Police seek suspect in gun incident

Police are looking for a man who allegedly fired a gun at two men in the Salt Lake area and rammed their car Thursday night.

Police said two men, ages 31 and 25, were at an automated teller machine at Salt Lake Shopping Center at 10:24 p.m. when they got into an argument with another man.

The man drove away in a dark-colored vehicle, and when the two men also drove away, they noticed the vehicle following them, police said.

The suspect then allegedly rammed their car with his vehicle and fired a gun at them.

Stranded boaters airlifted to safety

Two boaters stranded on a small island off the Mokapu Peninsula were rescued Thursday night.

The men, in their late 30s, had been skin-diving and attempted to return home in a 17-foot boat that experienced engine trouble. They anchored about 400 feet offshore of Moku Manu, a small island about 1,000 feet off the Mokapu Peninsula, and set off a flare, said Honolulu fire Capt. Terry Seelig.

Seas were moderately rough with 4-foot swells and winds blowing 10 to 15 mph, Seelig said. When no one saw their first flare, the men decided to swim to Moku Manu island and were able to get to a sheltered ledge, where they fired off more flares and finally attracted attention.

The Honolulu Fire Department helicopter, assisted by the Federal Fire Department, Marine Base Hawaii Waterfront Operations, and the U.S. Coast Guard located the men and airlifted them off the island at about 11 p.m.

The men were examined by paramedics and were found to be OK, Seelig said.
