Girl thrown from SUV in collision

A 15-year-old Kahului girl suffered "life-threatening injuries" in a crash in Kahului on Sunday night when she was ejected from a sport utility vehicle, Maui police said.

The accident happened at the intersection of Hana Highway and Dairy Road at about 7:10 p.m. Police said a 2006 Nissan Pathfinder driven by a 20-year-old Kahului man heading west on Hana Highway collided with a 2010 Jeep Wrangler driven by a 44-year-old Phoenix man that was headed north on Dairy Road.

The 15-year-old girl was thrown from the back seat of the Pathfinder. The driver and two other people in the Pathfinder — a 22-year-old Wailuku man and another 15-year-old Kahului girl — were treated and released from Maui Memorial Medical Center. The injured girl, who was admitted to the hospital, was not wearing a seat belt, police said.

The driver of the Jeep and a 44-year-old passenger, also from Phoenix, did not suffer serious injuries.
