Maui police officers early this morning fired at a Toyota pickup truck that struck an officer at the Windmill Beach area.

Two of the five occupants of the truck were arrested and three were injured and taken to Maui Memorial Hospital, Maui police said.

Detectives have opened an attempted murder case and are at the scene of the shooting, police said.

The incident began at 4:14 a.m. when officers responded to a report of numerous gunshots at an area known as Windmill Beach, police said.

Witnesses were telling officers that a Toyota pickup truck was involved when the truck began to approach, police said.

The driver of the truck refused to stop and accelerated toward the officers, hitting one of them, police said. Officers shot at the truck as the driver fled.

The truck later stopped at Honolua Bay Lookout.
