Maui police officers shot at a Toyota pickup truck after it struck an officer at the Windmill Beach area early yesterday.

Two of the five occupants of the truck were arrested, and three were injured and taken to Maui Memorial Hospital, police said in a statement.

County officials could not say yesterday whether the injured men had been shot by police. Maui police did not return calls seeking clarification, but Lt. Tivoli Faaumu told Hawaii News Now one man was shot in the buttocks.

A later statement said an 18-year-old male suffered a serious but non-life-threatening injury and was flown to Honolulu for treatment. Another male, 18, injured his left ear, and a third, 17, was treated for a buttocks injury and released from Maui Memorial Medical Center, the statement said.

The incident began at 4:14 a.m. when officers responded to a report of numerous gunshots at Windmill Beach.

Witnesses were telling officers that a Toyota pickup was involved when the truck approached them, according to police.

The driver of the truck refused to stop and accelerated toward the officers, hitting one of them, police said. Officers shot at the truck as the driver fled.

The truck stopped later at Honolua Bay Lookout, where the occupants were apprehended.
