Victim of Kapaa crash is identified

A 19-year-old Kilauea motorist who died Sunday morning from injuries in a Kapaa car crash was identified yesterday as Jessie Monroe, Kauai officials said.

Monroe, who was the driver, was airlifted to the Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu.

Monroe lost control of her car on Kuhio Highway in Kapaa at about 1:15 a.m. Sunday and crashed into a boulder on the side of the road.

Lava stalls 100 yards from home

A lava flow that forced the evacuation of a Kalapana family on Sunday appears to have slowed its progress on their home and remains about 100 yards away, Big Island officials said yesterday.

"It doesn’t look like it’s advancing as rapidly as before," said John Drummond, one of the Big Island’s Civil Defense administrative officers. "That’s fantastic."

Flowing lava from Kilauea Volcano did continue to ignite brush fires in the wooded areas around Kalapana access road, Drummond said.

At least four other homes are in the area but are not in immediate danger.
