Firefighters battle Makua blaze

Honolulu Fire Department personnel and federal firefighters last night were battling a 100-acre brush fire in the Makua area of Leeward Oahu.

The blaze was reported at 2:14 p.m., and was not under control as of about 8 p.m., said Capt. Robert Main, fire department spokesman.

19-year-old critical after mo-ped crash

A 19-year-old man was in critical condition after a collision involving two mo-peds in Kaimuki Friday night.

The crash happened at the intersection of Waialae Avenue and St. Louis Drive at 10:42 p.m. The man was taken to Queen’s Medical Center.

The other mo-ped operator, a 24-year-old woman, was taken to Queen’s Medical Center for minor injuries and was released yesterday morning.

Police said the man was operating a blue 2009 mo-ped that had been reported stolen and traveling east on Waialae Avenue when he started to make a left turn onto St. Louis Drive and collided with a black mo-ped, which was traveling west. Neither mo-ped operator was wearing helmets.

Auto theft ends with police car crash

Police arrested a 19-year-old man Friday night for allegedly driving a stolen vehicle into an occupied police car.

Police said the officer was trying to prevent the suspect from leaving the Salt Lake area, where he allegedly stole the vehicle of a 39-year-old woman. The officer attempted to block the street with a police car when the alleged stolen vehicle hit the squad car.

Man arrested for assaulting his wife

A 64-year-old Hawaii Loa Ridge man was charged with abusing his estranged wife and threatening to kill her.

Police said Gordon Ira and his wife, 67, had an argument yesterday that escalated into a physical assault of the woman. Ira allegedly grabbed her by the arm and wrist, causing her injury. He also grabbed her neck and restricted her from breathing for a short period, police said. He also threatened to kill her, police said.

Ira is free on $1,000 bail pending an Aug. 5 Family Court appearance.

Info about killer sought

Friends of a Kauai woman whose body was found July 3 are offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of her killer.

Police opened a homicide investigation after the body of Amber Jackson, 57, was found in a wooded area a few miles from her Kapahi home.

Anyone with information on Jackson’s death is asked to call the Kauai Police Department at 241-1711, the department’s Investigative Services Bureau at 241-1696 or CrimeStoppers at 241-1887.
