Abunai 95 boys take soccer title

Hawaii’s Abunai 95 boys team captured the U.S. Club Soccer National Cup championship in the boys U-15 premier division at Virginia Beach, Va. yesterday.

After sweeping through its bracket undefeated in three matches by the combined score of 13-2, the Mililani-based team topped TAP FC Barcelona of Alexandria, Va., 2-0, in the title game yesterday morning.

Team members are Guy Ahlo, Micah Cabagbag, Zachary Carvalho, Matthew Fronda, Leo Klink, Tyler Matas, Cameron Metz, Andrew Momohara, Kazuto Moribe, Jarin Morikawa, Kouri Nago, Corey Nemeth, Jake Sagami, Jensen Toner, Renato Torquato and Ezra White.

The team was led by head coach Darrin Goo, assistant coaches Aundrea Toner and Jon Morikawa, and team manager Julie Sagami.

Eggens is second-team All-American

University of Hawaii sophomore attacker Monika Eggens was named Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches Women’s All-America second team.

UH junior Leonie Van Der Molen was named an honorable mention.

Eggens led the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation in scoring, averaging 2.31 goals per game and totaling 60 goals while playing all 26 matches.

The native of Pitt Meadows, British Columbia, was a first-team All-MPSF selection and also was named to the All-MPSF tournament team.

Van Der Molen, a native of Diemen, Netherlands, scored 30 goals this past season, which ranked in the top 10 in the conference. Van Der Molen was a second-team All-American last season.

2 Hawaii surfers advance

Two Hawaii surfers have advanced through the Round of 12 at the U.S. Open of Surfing at Huntington Beach, Calif.

Yesterday, Carissa Moore of Honolulu claimed the first heat in the round of 24, which included three-time women’s world champion Stephanie Gilmore and defending event champion Courtney Conlogue.

Fellow island surfer Alana Blanchard won the sixth heat.

Billfish tournament under way

The Game Fishing Club of South Australia jumped out to an early lead in the 51st Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament, which began in waters off Kona yesterday.

The Australian club led the team standings with 900 points, followed Japan’s Olympian Dream Fishing Club (625). The Japanese team was buoyed by team captain Yasuhiko Kagabum, who boated a 395-pound Pacific blue marlin in just under an hour. Old South Marlin Club #1 (600) is in third place.

Thirty-one teams are vying in this year’s competition, including teams from Australia, Canada, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, South Africa and Tahiti, along with teams from California, Florida, North Carolina and Hawaii. The competition continues through Friday.
