Police close Kaukonahua Road for four hours due to brush fire
Police reopened Kaukonahua Road between Wilikina Drive and Farrington Highway in Waialua after closing it for about four hours tonight so firefighters could battle a 100-acre brush fire.
Fire officials said the fire was 80 percent contained and that firefighters would return in the morning to assess the situation.
Six engine companies, three water tankers and the Honolulu Fire Department helicopter were called to Kaukonahua Road near the Farrington intersection in Waialua beginning about 5:10 p.m, said Honolulu fire Capt. Terry Seelig.
The fire was off to the side in a “difficult-to-reach” area on the mauka side of Kaukonahua, Seelig said. It is not near any homes at this time, he said.
