Hit-and-run accident injures girl, 5

A 5-year-old girl was taken to the hospital in critical condition shortly after 3:30 p.m. yesterday after being hit by a truck or SUV at the intersection of Coolidge and South King streets.

Her condition was upgraded later to serious condition.

Police closed a portion of King Street near the Isenberg Street intersection but reopened it later in the afternoon.

The hit and run occurred in the same area where police conducted a traffic crackdown last December. In 90 minutes, officers issued more than 80 tickets for failing to yield to pedestrians, using a cell phone while driving, seat belt violations and other infractions.

3 hurt in highway crash near Puna

Three people were transported to the Hilo Medical Center yesterday after two cars collided at the intersection of Mamaki Street and Highway 11 near Puna.

According to Hilo police, a vehicle on Mamaki Street driven by a man in his 20s was hit by a vehicle headed toward Puna and driven by a 61-year-old man on Highway 11. Both drivers and an elderly female passenger were taken to the hospital.

Police closed the Puna-bound lanes of Highway 11 for more than three hours after the crash.

Kaimuki man arrested in sex assault

A 35-year-old man was arrested yesterday in a kidnapping and sexual assault case involving a 19-year-old woman in Waikiki. The Kaimuki man was arrested at 2:40 p.m. near the Olivine Restaurant on Kalakaua Avenue. He was released pending investigation.

Woman knocked out, man jailed

Police arrested a 31-year-old Waikiki man who allegedly knocked unconscious and threatened to kill the 24-year-old woman he was dating.

The couple was arguing at about 5:45 a.m. Friday when the man choked the woman twice and threw her across the bedroom, where she hit her head on a dresser and was knocked out for several minutes, police said.

The man then held a knife to the woman’s stomach and threatened to kill her, police said.

Officers arrested the man at about 9:50 a.m. Friday on Kalia Road. He was booked on suspicion of second-degree assault and terroristic threatening.

Teen fingered in Mililani robbery

A 17-year-old boy who allegedly participated in the beating and robbery of a 16-year-old boy last month in Mililani has been arrested, police said.

The victim was walking through a public park at about noon on July 25 when five juvenile boys accosted him, police said.

One of the boys said he had a gun, and all five boys took the victim to a secluded area in the park where the victim was beaten and his backpack taken, police said.

One of the suspects was identified Friday in a photo lineup, arrested and released pending investigation.
