Teen arrested in knifepoint robbery

Police arrested a teenager who allegedly robbed three boys at knifepoint and sprayed them with Mace at a playground in Waialae-Kahala last week.

The boys, two 13 and one 14, were loitering at Wilson Community Park at about 1:35 a.m. Friday when the suspect approached with a knife, demanding their property, police said. As he and another male suspect walked away, two of the victims asked for the return of their backpack, and the suspect sprayed them with Mace and left, police said.

The father of one of the victims drove by the playground Monday afternoon with his son, saw the suspect and called police, and the 17-year-old male suspect was arrested.

Man is injured in apparent stabbing

Police are investigating the apparent stabbing of a man at about 6:50 p.m. yesterday at a Waikiki hotel.

A man in his 20s was taken by ambulance from the Aqua Waikiki Wave to a hospital in serious condition, an Emergency Services Department spokesman said.

The man was suffering from what appeared to be at least one stab wound, said Bryan Cheplic, of the city Emergency Services Department.

Man charged in Big Island car chase

Big Island authorities yesterday charged a 32-year-old Hilo man, who allegedly eluded police Sunday during a high-speed chase and collided with another car, seriously injuring an elderly woman.

Alexander Borrero III was charged with first-degree attempted murder, first-degree negligent injury, unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, reckless driving and resisting an order to stop.

Borrero allegedly was first spotted in Puna driving a stolen truck, then was seen in a stolen Honda in Paradise Park, police said.

Borrero allegedly attempted to flee from police by reversing the Honda at high speed, nearly running over the officer, police said.

Officers began a chase but discontinued the pursuit shortly afterward, police said.

Borrero, driving the Honda, later collided with a Toyota Camry at Highway 11 and Mamaki Street in Hilo. The force of the collision caused the Honda to be shorn in half, causing serious injury to an 86-year-old Hilo woman, who was a passenger in the Camry, and Borrero, who was pinned under the front half of the car.

Borrero is scheduled to appear in court today in Hilo District Court, and is being held at Hawaii Community Correctional Facility, unable to post $500,000 bail.
