The driver of a 2006 Lexus that struck a light pole in Kaimuki this morning died apparently of a medical condition that she suffered just before the crash, police traffic investigators said.

The Lexus was traveling Honolulu-bound at about 6:50 a.m. on Waialae Avenue when the woman, 86, lost control near the 7th Avenue intersection and struck the pole “at an extremely low speed” which caused minimal damage, police said.

Police closed several lanes of Waialae, backing up rush-hour traffic coming in from East Honolulu

The woman was taken in critical condition to the hospital where she later died, said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Emergency Services Department.
